What is a Dissociative Disorder?

A dissociative disorder is a mental health condition that causes a disconnection between thoughts, memories, feelings, or sense of identity. This disruption often occurs as a protective response to trauma, helping the mind distance itself from painful experiences. Individuals may feel detached from reality, lose track of time, or feel as though they’re observing themselves from the outside. Common forms include dissociative amnesia, depersonalization/derealization disorder, and dissociative identity disorder.
While these symptoms can be distressing, recovery is possible with understanding and proper care. At Wellness Whisper Psychiatry, we focus on helping individuals regain a sense of wholeness, safety, and control through compassionate, trauma-informed treatment.
